The Aquaculture National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center
The Huazhong Agricultural University Aquaculture Experimental Teaching Center was established as a university experimental teaching demonstration center in Hubei Province in 2007 and authorized as a national experimental teaching demonstration center by the Ministry of Education in 2012. The Center houses joint aquatic national experimental teaching demonstration units and its staff includes 65 experimental teachers and 8 full-time experimental technicians. The Center has four functional laboratories: Aquatic animal medicine, Fishery resources and environment, Aquatic biology, and Aquatic animal genetics and breeding, and one school teaching practice base. Every year the Center hosts 24 experimental courses and more than 200 experimental projects for undergraduates of aquaculture, aquarium science and technology, animal science, veterinary medicine, biological technology, biological sciences, and other multiple majors, and graduates of aquaculture and fisheries. The Center promotes combined teaching, research, and practice by combining experimental learning, social practice, production practice, graduation practice and technological innovation. The Center is now a distinctive open experimental teaching center for freshwater aquaculture with a long history of research and teaching excellence.
Key Laboratory of Freshwater Animal Breeding, Ministry of Agriculture
The Key Laboratory of Freshwater Animal Breeding was established in 2011 by the Ministry of Agriculture, with a focus on freshwater fisheries and the utilization of genetic diversity to enhance aquaculture. Work at the laboratory contributes to the development of freshwater fisheries, the regional economy and the provision of trained researchers and technicians to the industry. Our staff and students carry out research on the reproductive biology of freshwater species. Research at the laboratory is aimed at supporting aquaculture industry growth by developing new theoretical approaches, new technologies, and new methods for freshwater animal breeding.
Freshwater Aquaculture Collaborative Innovation Center of Hubei Province
The Freshwater Aquaculture Collaborative Innovation Center of Hubei Province is led by Huazhong Agricultural University, in collaboration with Yangtze University, Wuhan Polytechnic University and five key enterprises and two research institutes. It was established by the Hubei provincial Departments of Education and of Science and Technology in 2012. The Center has developed four innovative themes or platforms based around sustainable freshwater aquaculture: (1) Freshwater aquatic animal breeding, (2) Disease control, (3) Nutrition and feed, and (4) Aquaculture environmental interactions. The Center is committed to cooperating with universities, institutes and industry. Our aim is to break down departmental, regional and disciplinary boundaries, and to integrate effectively the resources of scientific and technological advancement. Ultimately we seek to promote collaboration and innovation to solve problems in freshwater aquaculture.
The Clinical Efficacy and Residual Test Unit of Aquatic Veterinary Drugs, Ministry of Agriculture.
The Clinical Efficacy and Residual Test Unit of Aquatic Veterinary Drugs was established by the Ministry of Agriculture in October 2007, and is a unit of qualification for registration of veterinary drugs approved by the Ministry of Agriculture. There are 17 professional teachers who are engaged in the clinical efficacy and testing of veterinary drugs for aquatic use.
The Huazhong Agricultural University Aquatic Cell Research and Preservation Center
The Center of Aquatic Cell Research and Preservation at Huazhong Agricultural University was built in 2005, and was approved by Huazhong Agricultural University in 2008. This Center is mainly engaged in the importation and creation, preservation and exploitation of the resources of cell lines of freshwater animals. The related cooperative research areas of the center include aquaculture virology, cell toxicology, genetics and breeding, cell nutrition, and cell biology.
The Haida Research Institute (School Enterprise Co-Construction)
In order to set up a cooperative relationship for “Enterprise-Education-Research”, and to utilize inter-disciplinary skills and talents from our College, the Guangdong Haida Group and the College of Fisheries established the Haida Research Institute in 2008.
The terms of operation are as follows: funding comes from the Haida Group, product research and development and personnel training are the responsibility of the College; and the Haida Group selects the personnel to work at the Institute where they learn cutting-edge technologies and advanced research methods. The Haida Research Institute carries out research mainly on the theory and application of advanced breeding practices for the blunt snout bream, Megalobrama amblycephala. This includes the identification and utilization of genomic resources, and the breeding and molecular biological research of growth, disease resistance, stress resistance, and inter-muscular bone related traits.
