After 26 years of continuous study and selection, specific strains of mandarin fish trained to accept artificial diets have been developed by the research group of Dr. Xu-Fang Liang based at the Tongwei Company Limited Engineering Research Center of Perch and Bass. The group bred a new strain of mandarin fish Huakang No.1 in 2014 that has an 18.54% higher growth rate than common strains under the same management conditions. This new strain has a high genetic diversity and a distinct genetic composition.
