Core reminder:Professor Yonghua Sun from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences was invited by professor Zexia Gao from College of Fisheries of our university to visit our Fisheries Forum in September 28th, 2020. He gave an academic report on “fish germ cell development and rapid directional breeding”, with focus on the establishment of “borrow belly pregnant” technology and its working mechanism. The report received warm response.

(correspondent Yaqin Zhong, the photo supplied by Yuting Hou)Professor Yonghua Sun from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences was invited to visit ourFisheries Forum in September 28th, 2020. He gave an academic report on “fish germ cell development and rapid directional breeding”. Professor Zexia Gao presided over the meeting.

Professor Sunpointed out that effective breeding and improved varieties are the premise of sustainable aquaculture. Professor Sun comprehensively and systematicallyintroducedhis team research works of “borrow belly pregnant” technology and its mechanisms. The report was mainly divided into two parts.

Firstly, Professor Sun went further into details about the principles of maternal factor and embryonic development through a series of experiments. Professor Sundemonstrated the important roleof the maternal factor β-catenin in fish development. Moreover, Professor Sun’s team found the existence ofNanog-cyp11a1-P5 Axisduring the mature stage of egg and the early embryonic development.

Next, ProfessorSun introduced their works related totheallogeneic pregnant, fromfour aspects ofprimordial germ cell, germ cell manipulation, early gonadal differentiation and male and female gamete mature. He achieved two technologies to label the germ cell lineage continuously in the whole-time phase. At last, Professor Sun wishedthat there will bethree regions of spermatogenium bank, germ cell bank and gene editing-germ cell bankin the National Zebrafish Resource Center, which will benefitthe researches of fish breeding biology and gene functions.

This report was the first offline academic report held byCollege of Fisheries, HZAU, in 2020. Teachers and students attached great importance to this hard-won face-to-face communication. They communicated actively withprofessorSun, which built a positive academic atmosphere.
