The research team led by Professor Wang Weimin of the college has carried out a series of researches on the germplasm resources, genetic breeding, functional genes and genomics of blunt snout bream for many years. Blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala, Yih, 1955) is the main aquaculture species in the freshwater pond polyculture system since 1960s in China.Through long-term cooperationwith enterprises, the research teamcollected 680breeding parents of wild blunt snout bream parents from Liangzi Lake, Yuni lake and Poyang Lake as basic breeding groups since 2007. In order to improve the growth rate and survival rate, the molecular marker assisted BLUP breeding system was established forM.amblycephala, including microsatellite-based pedigree, traits related molecular markers screening, genetic parameters of breeding traits evaluation.Throughfour generations of continuous breeding, a new variety withhigh survival rate and fast growth rate was successfully selected. Compared with thewild population, the growth rate ofthis new variety increased by more than 22%, and the survival rate increased by more than 20% under the same culture conditions. The new variety has been widelydistributed into farmers, which has produced significant economic and social benefits.
